Hello, Ruelo.

WHOA HOLD ON.

IS THIS A FOOD & FASHION POST?

WHY YES IT IS.

Sadly, this is the best photo of my outfit for Saturday night. Sometimes I wish I had a hologram take my outfit photos for me. I’m too lazy to bring out my tripod and take multiple shots until I get a good one. Yikes, sounds like I’m losing the flame D: but I still love to dress up, no worries. I’m just having a darn diddly difficult time capturing it.

This weekend was a birthday celebration for a friend and we went to an Indian restaurant, a bubble tea place, and a patisserie which was heavily documented in photos by me. However, the place was kind of dim so I had the ISO setting at 6400, making the photos super grainy D: I don’t think I needed to do that, but I had a food coma so I wasn’t thinking straight.

We went to Ruelo in Richmond Hill, a fabulous authentic French patisserie. The owner and primary chef is a very pretty lady who goes by the name of Jackie. She graduated from the University of Toronto in Computer Engineering (uh, SEXY) and later studied to become a pastry chef at Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa.

The pastries include these shiny dome thingies (I forgot what they were called), MACARONS (very expensive cookies but oh so good…I loved the Espresso one), and cakes. Oh my lordie, it was NIRVANA in a pastry.

Oh, and their teas are AMAZING. When you go to Ruelo, you need to DO IT UP. It’s expensive, but damnit, you don’t do it often so get the whole nine yards! Macarons! Cakes! Teas! Wear pretty clothes! Bring your awesome friends!!!!!

We took lots of pictures, of course. And one creepy dude decided he wanted to be part of the fun too:

LOL yes I am wearing my plum purple WINTER TIGHTS in August. I get cold very easily…

Cafe Crepe

If you live in Toronto and love fun fashion, I am sure you are no stranger to Queen Street West.  Honestly, eating is probably the last thing on my mind when I waltz down this street.  It just never occurred to me that good food can be found there too.  Davis suggested for us to make a stop at Cafe Crepe for a quick meal during one of our shopping runs.  Brilliance!!  This is why having Davis in my life is such a yummy thing.

This was our second time consuming delicious french-things here.  The fact that this little joint lured us back in for another bite means a huge deal.  Yes, it’s because their crepes really are wonderful.  I don’t know what kind of crepes you are used to having, but prior to visiting this place, I’ve always thought they were made with sweet batter and come out rather thin.  The flavour of the crepe here is neutral and takes on the taste of the fillings.  Its texture is thick and fluffy, giving you great satisfaction when you sink your teeth into it.  The great thing about Cafe Crepe is you can choose whatever fillings that float your boat.  They have suggested combinations, but really you are free to ask for what you want.  How fun is this create-your-own-crepe business!

Check out this triangular goodness!  I chose spinach, feta cheese and egg.  While I generally favour sweet fillings like nutella, strawberry and banana, I quite adored this savoury crepe. It was hardy without being overwhelming.

They really load up on the toppings.

Cafe Crepe offers a wide array of specialty coffees, which makes perfect sense, n’est-ce pas?  We enjoyed a cup of cappuccino made with illy coffee.

I Want Wednesdays: Dufflet Pastries

I am having some major sweet cravings. And I am gaining some major weight! I’ve reached that point in my life where my metabolism just ain’t the way it used to be.

Aug introduced me to Dufflet Pastries at the Toronto Beaches neighbourhood (1917 Queen Street East) two summers ago and we strive to visit at least once every summer. It’s the perfect date spot for the daytime for a small sweet snack and coffee.

Most pastry cafés usually offer huge slices of cake which I cause my arteries to get very angry, but Dufflet serves up delightful pleasures in small, manageable sizes.

Dufflet

Above Picture: I think my half-eaten bar is called the Kahlua Toffee: “Lots of pecans, coffee and Kahlua, drizzled with our real, buttery caramel.”  I think in 2008, when I had my first Dufflet bar, it was the Rocky Blondie: “Rich butterscotch base smothered in real chocolate chunks, marshmallows, walnuts and our real buttery caramel.” Aug had the Sweet D: “Named after Dufflet herself — lots of peanuts, real caramel and peanut butter, rice krispies and marshmallows; topped with real chocolate.” (source)

The above photographs were taken last year, and I was too focused on getting that sweet stuff into my system than taking pictures of it. So, I want to go back this summer, try something new and remember to take better photos :D

Oh, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day to those who celebrate it!

From the last 30 Rock episode, I am convinced that the Jamaican accent is derived from the Irish accent“YOU’RE GOING IRISH!”.

Duff wings for me, Duff wings for you!

Friday night was such an on-accident Simpsons-theme night (Duff/Bowlerama combo).

I went out with my cousin and my brother to Duff’s Famous Wings on Bayview & Eglinton (1604 Bayview Avenue). Their spiciness scale was crazy!! We ordered MEDIUM spice wings and they were already Tabasco sauce-hot. They had 5-7 levels of spiciness above that :S

Again, I am too shy to take pictures inside : I need to be stealthier.

Then we went bowling at Bowlerama on Yonge & Finch.

:O first time I ever finished a game with a triple digit score. It’s usually something awful like 30-50 D:

I don’t bowl that often. You can tell by the 2 straight strikes followed by mediocre/no scores. A combination of luck and … luck.

And bowling, I learned, is not about looking good; it’s about “getting the job done”. I look like a deranged flying cat when I bowl… my hair flails around a lot and my posture is super weird. Not a glamourous sport.

Craft Burger, 3/4/2010

I work near King & Spadina so Aug and I decided to hit up Craft Burger on King St. West, yesterday.

I had the Signature Craft Burger and he had the Signature Blue Burger. I must say, never in my life have I noticed the tastiness of the mayonnaise on a burger (more so than the taste of the burger itself). The mayo was probably the element that stuck out to me the most, and probably the only place I would allow to put mayo on my burger (I normally don’t get mayo).

The burgers came on a steel tray, and not wrapped up in paper (I find redundant that fast food places do that; we’re going to unwrap it and eat it anyway). As you might know, I am a big fan of minimal packaging, especially for food.

The place was tiny, but I really liked the decor inside: shiny orange plastic seats against natural wood tables. The girl who took my order was also really cute. Like, really really cute ^o^;; I didn’t get a picture of the inside (let alone the cute girl) because it was packed with people who potentially don’t want their photo taken. It’s quaint.

All in all, 1 out of 1 (my rating scale is 1 or 0, by the way). Just don’t visit with a group of friends. I’d say go with a friend or go by yourself.

YAY CRAFT BURGER! ^_^

——————————-

Afterward, we went to the Starbucks just steps away:

Starbucks, King & Spadina

Before Craft Burger, I went to Tim Hortons and got myself a cup of coffee (my first Tim’s coffee purchase since the start of Roll Up The Rim To Win event).

I won a free donut : damnit, I want a free car. So I can sell the car. And use the proceeds to buy myself a sweet studio + lighting kit. Sigh. Why does photography have be such as an expensive hobby?

You are my getaway

Davis and I created our own valentine’s day on Feb 16th.  We took the day off from work to make a quick getaway to the small town of Oakville (Ontario).  It’s a quiet but chic little place with a sense of relaxation in the air.    We got there late in the afternoon and the streets were bare although all the stores were opened.  We spent a couple of hours strolling downtown and discovered many refined restaurants and boutiques.

After checking out the meat shop, we went across the street to a very quiet Second Cup for some apple cider.

For dinner, we headed to the Oliver and Bonacini at Oakville Place.  We love the food at the one here in Toronto and its Oakville counterpart did not disappoint in the least bit.  Literally everything I’ve tried from the menu so far has been superb.  This time we had the Salmon Pizza, Spicy Sausage Penne and Cashew-crusted Chicken on Japanese Caesar.  The chicken was a little dry, so I sent it back and it was replaced by a very juicy piece.

CNY and VDay with style

I feel pretty strongly about preserving Chinese culture in my lifestyle.  I love celebrating Chinese New Year and there’s no better way to show such pride than wearing it on my sleeve.

After a big feast with my family, Davis and I headed downtown with a couple of friends in search for some entertainment.  We walked by The Bier Markt and decided to go on in.  There was a live band playing and people busting their moves on a small dance floor in front of the stage.  We opted for a table in a relatively quiet corner to chat. I was impressed by their beer selection (as expected), but the mood and service was only mediocre.  In risk of sounding like a bit of a snob, these things are very important to me when it comes to a good restaurant experience.  The food, however, was not half bad and definitely picture-worthy.  I was in a martini-type of mood so I had two rounds of Green Apple while the boys did beer.  The Belgium chocolate fondue was delicately delish.  We also had the spicy sausage flatbread and “a pot of moules”, aka mussels.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone. :]

I told you I am colour obsessed

You know by now that I love to incorporate colours into my otherwise dull life.  There’s no colour that I refuse to wear.  I used to have real beef with brown, but that was because I was blind and did not understand the complexity and richness of it.

This is a neutral eye with a pop of coppery red, a perfect example of how browns can be interesting!  Wow this camera is amazing at picking up colour. As a makeup artist, I try to be adventurous with the colours I use.  This is MAC’s Nylon, Soft Brown, Cork, Espresso and Cranberry (from brow to lashline).

Mint green is amazing!  Thanks for bringing this colour into our realm of consciousness, Chanel.

I also try to keep an eye out for colours I find in my surroundings that inspire me.  I’m seeing this pink and green combination a lot lately.  This is, by the way, my default drink – Cosmo!  The manly chocolate martini was Davis’.

Orange Obsession

Who doesn’t love orange, a fruit and a colour in one?   Life doesn’t get any better than this.  Other than its citrusy good taste, I am also a fan of the peeling procedure.  What an art!!  I wonder, how do YOU peel your orange?  Am I insane for paying attention to such an insignificant thing?  I like to make them into flowers!

Are you green, baby?

Nothing beats guacamole when you feel lazy but need to entertain a big group of people with food.  You literally just throw everything into a bowl, mash it all together, season with salt and pepper and serve with tortilla chips.  Impress your friends today!  I like mine with a ton of onion and cilantro.

He chopped and I mixed.  The ingredients consist of avocado, tomato, onion, jalapeno peppers, lime juice and cilantro if you like.  And of course, you have to be stylish when you’re cooking.  Come on, that just goes without saying.
