I Want Wednesdays: Interesting Buttons

My wardrobe consists of many items that require buttoning.  I’ve got piles of blouses, cardigans and blazers.  Most of these have very monotonous buttons that do nothing for the aesthetics of the garment.  Is this happening only to me?  When was the last time you saw something with interesting buttons?  The items that are in the market now are adorned with either boring plastic or cheap looking gold with no detail (of course there are always exceptions).  I am not even talking about $20 blazers from H&M.  Even clothes that I pay a fortune for lack distinctive button detail.

Look at my BCBG blazer:

How dull.

Now check out these guys from InWiththeOldVintage on Etsy and picture them on the above blazer.  Hello how smart!!  I’m glad my mom taught me how to sew at a young age.  I want to buy these and swap out my ugly buttons.  Replacing buttons of a clothing item to update its look is not a new concept.  Wise people have been doing it for centuries.

On the other hand, my Mackage coat has brilliant buttons.  Although they are plastic, they are extremely shiny and give the coat a very special finish.  Great buttons have great power!

I Want Wednesdays (Oops it’s already Thursday!): Ear Cuff

The style of Visual kei/glam rock holds a very special place in my heart.  My alter ego, Snow, loves all things badass.  She’s everything I am afraid to be and does everything I am afraid to do.  Just to show you what I mean, here are some pieces from SNOW’s closet.

I try not to shop for this kind of stuff too much mainly because I cannot wear any of it to work.  (Boo!  Why can’t I be an executive assistant who rocks combat boots?)  I did some etsy browsing this week for nifty jewellery and came across this beauty:

dearbearcat, a designer from Hong Kong (yay hometown), makes these funky ear cuffs that hook around the ear.  I am in much love.  Check out her store for more of her rockin’ creations.  Of course I can’t make a purchase until after Lent.  Wait for me, beautiful ear cuff!

I Want Wednesdays: Dufflet Pastries

I am having some major sweet cravings. And I am gaining some major weight! I’ve reached that point in my life where my metabolism just ain’t the way it used to be.

Aug introduced me to Dufflet Pastries at the Toronto Beaches neighbourhood (1917 Queen Street East) two summers ago and we strive to visit at least once every summer. It’s the perfect date spot for the daytime for a small sweet snack and coffee.

Most pastry cafés usually offer huge slices of cake which I cause my arteries to get very angry, but Dufflet serves up delightful pleasures in small, manageable sizes.

Above Picture: I think my half-eaten bar is called the Kahlua Toffee: “Lots of pecans, coffee and Kahlua, drizzled with our real, buttery caramel.”  I think in 2008, when I had my first Dufflet bar, it was the Rocky Blondie: “Rich butterscotch base smothered in real chocolate chunks, marshmallows, walnuts and our real buttery caramel.” Aug had the Sweet D: “Named after Dufflet herself — lots of peanuts, real caramel and peanut butter, rice krispies and marshmallows; topped with real chocolate.” (source)

The above photographs were taken last year, and I was too focused on getting that sweet stuff into my system than taking pictures of it. So, I want to go back this summer, try something new and remember to take better photos :D

Oh, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day to those who celebrate it!

From the last 30 Rock episode, I am convinced that the Jamaican accent is derived from the Irish accent“YOU’RE GOING IRISH!”.

I Want Wednesdays: Sportswear outside the gym

I have a strong distaste for gym wear worn outside of the gym.  Actually, that’s not a fair statement.  I think the occasional track suit and sneakers are an obvious choice for lazy days of wanting to do nothing in particular.  Sporty items also have the uncanny ability to completely change the vibe of an outfit.  What I meant by gym wear is really just yoga pants.  They are the bane of my eyes.  :(   It’s not such a problem to be in those pants if you are en route to the gym already dressed in your gear, or if you are a hardcore yoga instructor and every step you take emits zen.  No doubt, yoga pants are comfortable and allow for a great deal of movement and flexibility.  But if you’re not just quickly running to the store to get milk nor have the talent to weave through the mall without being seen by a single soul, put them yoga pants away.  Whoever named them Yoga pants is a perfect genius who deserves a billion gold stars because you just can’t be clearer than naming something by its purpose and function.  Do you use your bottle opener to sharpen your pencils?  Do you (I assume you’re human)  consume cat food?   If not, save the yoga pants for yoga, not for yo-guy let’s go out.

What was I talking about?  Oh right this is a I Want Wednesdays post.  While I lead a pretty active lifestyle, I don’t have much sportwear mainly because I don’t wear it outside of the gym.  These, however, made me think twice.  Adidas by  Stella McCartney is a brilliant line.  I can’t believe I actually want gym clothes.  This never happens!

Cover Up Studio All-in-One
I adore this!  The length of the sleeves and legs can be adjusted.  It’s a romper but a billion times more versatile.

Golf Performance Pants
I don’t golf, but check out the cutting of these pants.  Out of this world.  Maybe I should take up golfing just so I can have these.

Run Performance Jacket
This is my favourite of all!  Zip-off sleeves, concealed hood AND it blocks rain and wind.

I Want Wednesdays: To last through lent!

Last year, I successfully completed 40 days of lent; I gave up purchasing personal possessions.  Other than a pair of socks that cost $4, I bought nothing else for myself (except for food, which I obviously needed to sustain my hyperactive lifestyle).   Going through the experience last year opened up my mind to appreciating rather than owning, enjoying rather than wanting.  I want to revisit that state of being again.  I think it’s going to be more difficult this year because I keep exposing myself to fashion blogs and shows and forums and things to upgrade myself as a wannabe-fashion blogger.  BUT, no excuses.  I will do it and do it well.

I always hear people talk about shopping their own closets and I wonder how successful I would be if I tried it.  In order to facilitate this “shopping”, I have started a wardrobe inventory spreadsheet on Excel.  This is an ongoing project I have yet to finish due to the amount of work it requires, but I feel like keeping my closet virtually organized will help me make sense of what I have and how I can maximize my wardrobe capital.

Here’s my layout:

Current Value: This is set up to automatically calculate the sum of all entries in $.  It’s right on top of the page to present a reality check.
Category: Assign a category for the item (e.g. blazer, dress pants, blouse, belt)
Dominant Colour: I like to sort by the main colour of the item for ease of mix and match
Brand/Designer: Self-explanatory
Place of Purchase: Sometimes I forget where I purchase things.  It’s a good idea to keep track if you travel and pick things up all around the world (eBay counts too!)
Description: I try to describe the item in my own words and include any special characteristics (e.g. pleated, gold buttons, metallic finish)
Wear rate: This is the number of times an item is worn if you update this on a regular basis.  It will show you just how much you love a certain pair of skinny jeans (dingdingding!!) or how much money you’ve wasted purchasing something you never ever wear.
Price: Obviously this is important information to capture!
Outfit ideas: Room to make other notes..

My spreadsheet is set up so I can sort by any of the above categories, giving me the flexibility to find out what the most expensive item in my closet is, how exceedingly often I shop at BCBG and Hugo Boss or how many darn blazers I already have.  Oh, knowledge is power indeed!

I Want Wednesdays: Colourful lips!

A lot of my makeup art is focused on the eyes.  I wear bold colours like purples, greens and blues very comfortably.  What’s odd is, I am nowhere near as adventurous with lip colour.  I am almost scared to put on anything with a hint of colour.  Shame on me!  I try on colours at home all the time and then chicken out right before I leave the house.  My way of thinking has got to change!  Lips should get to have fun too, right?  Besides, a strong lip takes significantly less time to put on than a bold eye.

My first step to enlightenment is this berry colour, specifically MAC’s Burgundy lip pencil.  I’ve worn it out in public several times and it’s finally starting to feel right on my lips.  I want to be brave enough to do reds, oranges, browns and purples.  It’s only lipstick!  What am I afraid of?

I Want… to wear heels!

I have, what people call, “yoga feet”. My feet are wide and grounded, and can’t handle heels for longer than 20 minutes.

This is why every time I buy heels at a shoe store, I am fooled. I try on the shoes for about 5 minutes max, try to get an idea of what it’s like to wear them for long periods of time WHILE being pressured by the sales associate (I used to be one, I know how much it costs a company to wait for a customer to decide on a sale) to buy them.

I have about three pairs of lovely heels which I only pull out when I have special occasions, but there is something about heels as everyday wear that makes me jealous of the girls who can do it without complaints.

This week I’m going to try to do it, but in the mean time…

Tell me about your comfiest pair of heels!

I’m working on designing a better signature, lol….

I Want Wednesdays: Silk Scarves

My love for silk scarves was cultivated when I was just a small child.  I would sit and admire the way my grandma tied a scarf around her neck – so swift and delicate.  I loved the feeling of the soft silk gently sweeping across my cheek when she enveloped me in her arms.  I knew, at the tender age of five, that silk scarves are one of the classiest items a woman can own.  Thank you for such a simple yet beautiful truth, grandma.

I only have two in my closet so far.  I look forward to a growing collection as I mature; maybe I can share it with my granddaughter some day.

My previous boss has the most amazing collection.  Out of all her scarves (and she has many), she loves the ones by Hermes the most.  I can understand why.

And this McQueen number suits my weekend self just fine!  It’s been on my wish list for years..  I’d better get it before I become too old to wear it.

I Want Wednesdays: DSLR!

(Oops, a day late)

I’ve had my Canon Powershot A620 for a few years now.  It’s the perfect point-and-shoot with a wide array of features.  All the pictures I’ve posted so far were taken by the bad boy.  Not too shabby, me thinks, except I do need PhotoShop magic.  I don’t claim myself a photographer, but in the perspective of a makeup artist,  I do see a DSLR as a good investment.  Plus, I make Justine look bad by posting cruddy pictures.  I’ve been looking at craigslist for cheaper deals and I am pretty sure I have my heart set on the Canon Rebel XS.  I hope I score something soon!

On another note, I picked up a shirt this past weekend from the men’s department of Club Monaco.  The original price was $89 (what!!!).  Of course nobody wanted it.  Then it went down to $59, $29; there were barely any takers.  I got it for $9 and there was still a shelf full of it.  I guess men don’t wear stuff like this?  How sad.  Oh well, more for me!

I quite like the pattern and colour.  Let’s see what I can do with it.
