Lipgloss and Black

Last Friday I won 2 free tickets to see The Clothing Show (although I was prepared to buy them to check out and support Sylvia and her sister Sam, who were featuring their fashion line, Lipgloss and Black) at Exhibition Place in Toronto.

I only attended Friday, because I was in Mississauga on Saturday (met Patrick Chan, SCORE! It was full of win, btw). I dropped by the Periwinkle booth, which housed the Lipgloss and Black collection, but Sylvia was nowhere to be found! I was then told that Sylvia was working at the Periwinkle store (on Bloor, near Runnymede station). So Aug & I missioned to Runnymede, about 45 minutes away from the Exhibition Place.

When I got there, Sylvia immediately recognized me and remembered my name! THIS GIRL IS FULL OF WIN.

Oh, I think I should tell a backstory:

In 2004, Sylvia and I were LiveJournal friends. She made these awesome bags that sold like hotcakes, and eventually branched out to jersey knit dresses. Mainly, though, I friended her because she had an awesome A-line haircut and studied Chemical Engineering! Super smart & talented!! What a gal, eh?

One day she posted pictures of her trip to Kolkatta, India… and I thought, what are the chances? Could she be Hakka-Chinese like me too? So I asked her, and we found out that our fathers went to school with each other! AHAHAH crazy stuff!

Anyway, 6 years later, we finally meet and chat and stuff. But I shamelessly walked into the store 5 minutes before it closed and I felt bad that I was holding up her closing. I found the bow hairband I wanted and bought it, and let her close up.

I love love love it! It’s not attached to a conventional hair band, but a really soft sequined elastic band which seamlessly sits on my hair. You can find the same one at her online Etsy store:

Someday I’ll return for the Single Strong Shoulder Dress that I am salivating over. I don’t know where I’d wear it to, but it would be a lovely dress to have.

Put the cuffs on me now

I have an unhealthy obsession with french cuff shirts.  Gahhhh they are so polished and grown-up.  Men and women who wear well-cut shirts paired with a smart cufflink exude such confidence and POW.  I think I am finally old enough to wear them without looking like a 12 year old wearing Dad’s suit to the elementary school graduation.  (How ironic, I was just talking about wearing children’s shorts earlier..)

While men say the hunt for a perfect french cuff dress shirt is strenuous, the process is even more difficult for women.  This explains why I only have 2 in my collection.  Besides, there’s no way to go for cheap when a quintessentially iconic item is involved.  The fabric and cutting are just as important as the kissing cuffs.  There’s nothing sophisticated about a wrinkly limp shirt even if it can speak French.

I’m leaving for Hong Kong on Sunday and will be there for three weeks.  Will try to blog if I have time.  :)

Shoes!

My apologies for the lack of updates. Life has taken a very sharp turn for the better/worse. I’ve been working full-time since the beginning of this month, and will be doing so until I go back to school in September. I’m also taking night classes + trying to work out. Gah!

Anyway, here’s a bunch of photos of shoes I own (this is just a fraction of my whole collection…these are just shoes I actually wear on a semi-regular basis + really love/cherish/have sentimental value):

Yeeeeah I don’t know what the whole point of this post was.

Heh.

I’m just a child

The other day, I talked about items I pined for from Stella McCartney’s Adidas collection.  I have since decided that they are too pricy for my wallet, so I opted for an SM fix from Stella McCartney for GapKids instead.  There’s really nothing that woman can’t do: imaginative but wearable women’s fashion, head-turning footwear, creative and animal-friendly handbags, chic sportswear and now fun but sophisticatedly designed children’s clothing… She’s probably got music genes from Paul too.

Fortunately, being a Tiny Tine, I fit into children’s clothing just fine.  Let me introduce to you the pleated sailor shorts I brought home.  This is a size 14 (the largest children’s size) which hugs my body perfectly.

What 5 year old will appreciate such fine detail?  Look at the pleating and intricate buttons, their placement, the shape of the shorts, the pockets, the fabric, the colour..  Man, there are some darn stylish kids running around in these shorts and I am happy to be one of them!

In keeping with the GapKids vibe, I tried to look like a child hence the lack of makeup. To fully enjoy the lushness of the brown, I chose to wear a simple beige top and some pearls for a touch of sophistication.  (I am wearing a child’s clothes afterall!  Gotta put in class somewhere…)

The top has interesting sleeve detail as well.  EXCITING STUFF!

Brown shorts with brown shoes..  I’m so creative, right?

I’m with the band

I don’t own very many band t-shirts. I don’t even own band t-shirts of bands that I listen to on a regular basis. I find that owning band t-shirts depends on a very long list of criteria which I will outline for you:

  1. Must be a band I listen to on a regular basis, and
  2. Design on t-shirt must look personally and aesthetically pleasing, and
  3. Must fit, and not swimming in it, and
  4. ok so this list isn’t that long

The Blood Brothers was a band I listened to in 2004-2006. It was one of the only post-hardcore/screamo bands I could enjoy. Liking The Blood Brothers was a very, very big exception. I could not listen to any other band that came under the scream category.

I walked into The Gap today and a sales associate was staring at my t-shirt and said, “I like your t-shirt….good band, too.” lol. Just thought that was funny because this t-shirt is 5 years old and The Blood Brothers are not that well-known. Yay for semi-obscure bands!
