Spring Cravings – J. Crew

It feels utterly hypocritical to be blogging about this in -7C weather, wrapped up in a blanket as I type this. But I can’t help but crave for spring when I saw J. Crew’s 2011 Spring collection.

Sometimes I like J.Crew not for their clothes in particular, but how they style their look book. There is a distinct theme.

Quirky and geeky, yet feminine and functional.

Look No. 1: That One Dress

To pull off the above look, I will need:

  • Glasses (I wear glasses every day, are you kidding?)
  • Long-sleeved knee-length dress (I have tons of these!)
  • Brogues / oxford flats (I have these too!)

Likelihood of rocking this look for Spring ’11: High

Look No. 2: Ocre Tan Brown Whatever You Wanna Call It

To pull off the above look, I will need:

  • A day at the vintage thrift store (or J.Crew) for ocre-coloured pants, socks, and shoes!
  • Sequined top (strangely I dislike sequins but that brown sequined top looks strangely enticing)
  • Lilac purple cardigan draped over the shoulders to throw you off
  • Suspenders (might be hard to find…)

Likelihood of rocking this look for Spring ’11: Low (I love it, but every piece if really unique)

***

Look No. 3: Pop of Yellow and Mile Long Legs

To pull off the above look, I will need:

  • Orange-red lipstick
  • Long-sleeved crew neck sweater with gold-coloured beads as stripes (whoa!)
  • Yellow satin shorts (yowza)
  • Peep-toe mesh boot sandals

Likelihood of rocking this look for Spring ’11: Medium (Yellow is a colour I’m not afraid to wear in the Spring time. It picks me up and makes me happy!)

***

Look No. 4: Military-inspired Softness & Other Oxymorons

To pull off the above look, I will need:

  • Boat-neck sweater/sweatshirt in a deep olive green
  • Khakis pleated skirt with paper bag waist
  • Brown leather belt
  • Olive green satchel with canvas strap
  • Flat sandals

Likelihood of rocking this look for Spring ’11: High

Ahhh! I can’t wait until it’s warm enough. Dreaming of Spring already….

Let Us Style Toronto

Ever since I saw House of Groves’ fashion installation at the Toronto LG fashion week, I’ve been daydreaming about getting my hands on a piece or two.  Well, magical things happen during Christmas time (knowledge extrapolated from years of watching Christmas movies) and my dreams materialized in the form of a holiday pop-up shop.  Jennifer Waters of House of Groves was kind enough to invite me to Let Us Style Toronto, a holiday pop-up sale at the Gladstone hotel showcasing designs of many local talents.

I took a little excursion to the artsy hotel over my lunch hour (I’m using the term very loosely).  Christmas always puts me in a sparkly mood, so the moment I stepped into the the venue, my eyes immediately darted to the jewellery displays.

Kristen Melville-Laborde’s work is innovative and diverse.  I can almost guarantee that anybody would be able to find a piece that they love in her collection.  She uses a wide range of gems, stones and metals from around the globe for her designs.  The ever-so-chic Kristen wore several of her own pieces and they truly were an extension of her personality and flair.  Check out more from Laborde Designs here.I brought this gorgeous bracelet home with me and it is now the newest member of my black jewellery collection.

IMONIQ really caught my eye.  I especially loved the drama of each piece and the generous usage of chains.  I chatted with Monique Anderson, founder and designer of IMONIQ, and was surprised to find out that she was actually a Ryerson fashion design graduate.  I don’t know what kind of clothes she designed, but her jewellery has really left an impression.  Talk about gorgeous statement pieces!

After these sparkly pit stops, I finally made my way over to the clothing section to hunt down House of Groves.  I must tell you, the pieces looked amazing on the rack.  I chatted with Jennifer and oohed and aahed as I did my browsing.  The shine of this vinyl jacket drew me in and I knew I needed to have it.  One can never have enough shiny items for the holiday!  House of Groves’ bolero is one of its signature looks and I am proud to have one in my closet.

How . completely . badass .

I had to pay by card and couldn’t believe Jen rang in my item with her iTouch.  The receipt went straight to my email.  Her and her husband are super techs!

Solution to Saturday’s Puzzle

Toronto is full of slush and snow right now that it’s unthinkable to wear flats like the ones I’m wearing here:

But that’s the beauty of flats — they’re flat! I can’t wear my big ugly (but so warm) boots around the office so I pack a pair of flats. I’m sure everyone does this, but you won’t believe how many people just trudge around the office with their snow boots without a care!

I’m also a late adopter of jeggings. At first I thought the idea was hilarious — passing leggings off as appropriate bottom wear without a skirt or long shirt covering your bottom! But I was mesmerized by the green military-inspired pants found on every fall/winter look book online, and had to acquire a pair.

This pair is from American Eagle Outfitters which I score for $16!! I normally wear a size 4 but I got these in a 6 because they’re really tight! And I already thought my legs were skinny! I can’t imagine how skinny most of AEO’s customers must be…or they’re just teenagers. I forget that I am not a teenager anymore ….

What do you think of jeggings? Or they a staple in your wardrobe? It’s very hard for pants to impress me, and when they do, I always buy as many as possible before the trend changes and they’re no longer found in stores!

I am wearing:

Blazer: Zara (2008)

Ruffle blouse: Jessica by Sears

Jegging pants: American Eagle Outfitters

Chloe-inspired mary jane flats: Spring Shoes (2008)

Like a prof

Elbow patches are my newest obsession! I’m looking for a tweed blazer with suede elbow patches now. They’re so adorable, like one of those old school professors.

I’ve also been wearing this maxi skirt every day, over thick tights. It is so much warmer than pants, surprisingly, and so much easier to sit in. Walking is no problem too, it’s loose enough to walk normal strides.

I am wearing:

Maxi skirt: H&M
Cardigan: Heritage 1981
Tee: Threadless

Head to toe

Despite the fact that turtlenecks are meant for people with long necks, I find myself wearing them a lot this winter due to the windy weather and my aversion to chunky knit scarves. As trendy as those chunky scarves might be, I can’t find one that doesn’t itches and scratches my face. I think I have sensitive skin. Anyhow, turtlenecks (especially ones made of soft, lightweight, jersey cotton!) are awesome for keeping my neck warm as a sensitive skin-friendly alternative.

Do you still buy fashion magazines? Fashion magazines used to be my go-to source for putting together outfits, but there was always a huge gap between dressing for reality and what I saw in the magazines. I haven’t bought a fashion magazine in years! I think the last time I bought a magazine was 2006, and the fashions in it are already pretty outdated. Anyhow, I found that fashion magazines were nice to look at in terms of observing fashion photography, but not something I would follow for real-life dressing inspiration.

My fashion fixes are now coming to me daily in the form of blog feeds. It’s insane how many fashion bloggers post outfit photos daily, and with such beautiful scenery and atmosphere, perfect lighting and perfect everything! I learned that most of the photos are taken by the boyfriends of these bloggers, conveniently. You’ve got these average joes (who happen to be excellent photographers) just snapping their girlfriends away and posting fashion photos for instant consumption. How can magazines compete?

It’s both sad and inevitable that the fashion magazine industry will one day close it doors, if it hasn’t already. But, like the rest of the world, we must move on.

I am wearing:

Turtleneck: American Eagle Outfitters
Maxi Skirt: H&M

Pop pop pop

Lately I’ve been snacking on Kernels popcorn.  I think ‘snacking’ might be the wrong word as it implies the activity only occurs occasionally and in short periods, and neither of which is true.  Other than thoughts of nom-nom-nom as I greedily consume the delightful morsels (I like Air Caramel the most), I’m also thinking about how eye-catching and fun the bag is.  The yellow and blue are so animated together!

It’s true, guys.  I wear my stomach on my sleeves.

I’m wearing..

Cardigan: Pink tartan (Don’t the flower buttons look like popcorn?? hehe)
Skirt: H&M
