What I do to my face every day

I’ll just dive right in.

Lips

The most important thing I must put on every day, without fail, is lip colour. Even though I have full lips, the pigment in my lips looks less than alive and uneven. I use Rimmel Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in True Vintage (the swatch on the website looks like a dark mauve but it is actually a muted matte red!) or Balistic (a brighter, truer red for special occasions). It’s also really cheap and Rexall often has it on sale for less than $4 a tube.

I always use Nivea lip balm. It is so basic and also nonsense-free. I found a lot of Blistex formulas stung my lips. I also don’t like using lip balm from a tin pot/tub because I don’t like using my fingers. I have gone through at least 3 of these tubes in a year. On the right is a USB key version of the lip balm, haha! I want that! I don’t know where it’s from, I just found it on Google search.

Cover up

I wear minimal to no foundations, but I have a big dark birthmark as seen here:

I use Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation in Bamboo Beige to cover it up. It’s thicker than most foundations so I use it like a concealer and only on that area. I blend it outwards and I usually don’t need to apply it all over my face to “match”, it is very close to my skin tone already. It’s pretty expensive too, so I only use a little.

Moisture

I’m often recommended to wear sunscreen with my daily moisturizer but it stings my face and I still looking for an alternative for my sensitive skin. I previously used Nivea (which I can’t imagine how, because it is so thick and full of fragrances) and a bunch of others like Marcelle (a Canadian brand) until I settled on Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Moisture for Sensitive Skin. It’s a no-nonsense moisturizer that I can apply without being afraid of how it will react near my eyes. My only complaint is that it’s not moisturizing enough for the winter, but excellent for the rest of the year.

Eyes

I don’t wear eyeliner every day. When I do, I use MAC Cosmetics’ Fluidline in Blacktrack. Check out Chris’ post on the Fluidline here.

TIP!

I use an angled paint brush that I found at an art supply store. I have an angled brush from MAC Cosmetics but the bristles are a little scratchy and I find art supply stores to have  a biggest selection of bristle textures and thicknesses. I highly recommend checking out an art supply store for your makeup brushes. Just wash them really well before you use them!!

I think I have covered everything in terms of daily beauty stuff. I don’t wear mascara because I am usually pressing my eyes against a camera and I don’t like getting mascara gunk on the viewfinder pad. I don’t wear blush but sometimes I use a bronzer for the cheeks but I don’t think I use it often to really describe how I use it in detail.

CLEAN UP!

To remove all makeup, I use baby oil and remove the oil residue with baby wipes. I have always used this method. I have tried using makeup removers, wipes specially made for makeup removal, and I have reacted badly to them. They sting, leave me with pink eye, and so forth. I stick to the baby products and won’t deviate. They’re also super cheap when they’re on sale!

What are constants in your daily beauty routine?

I’d love to hear what you must put on every day and why? Out of habit? Makes you look more awake/perky? Reminds me of a particular memory?

Put some pants on!

My affection for pants predates any fashion awareness.  Not that I had a word of complaint when mom put me in cutesy skirts and dresses, I just really envied the boys who created havoc freely without the worry of diaper flash (what a fashion faux pas!).  Jeans had no love from me though; I thought the material was too stiff and rough.  In my high school years, while everyone was rocking flare jeans (yes, I’m old), I wore stuff like orange modrobes (the ones with the seatbelt-like buckle), baggy red pants, white dress pants and pink fleece sweats.  Fast forward to today, my sense of adventure with trousers remains.  I could easily do without wearing denim for the rest of my life, but deep depression would reduce me to a pantless mess if I had to live without my beloved pants collection.  Now that you got me talking about my favourite thing in the world, I am seriously considering busting out said orange modrobes!  One of these days, my friends..

Here’s a trouser with a different silhouette than usual.  I’m totally nailing Style Goal #4!

The pockets won me over.

Guide: Style Goals of 2011

Have you drafted out your new year’s resolution yet?  Other than the usual suspects like losing weight, completing a marathon, saving money and mastering the art of flying, I strongly encourage you to jot down some fashion resolutions for the new year.  Give yourself the reason to rethink your current style and perhaps add some elements that will rejuvenate and inspire!

I have nailed down 5 style goals for the new year:

1)  BIG HAIR - I’ve always been a fan of voluminous locks.  For this year, I intend to keep the hair long and oh so big.  I normally don’t wear my hair pin straight anyway, but I wanna go poofier and bigger.  I’m seriously contemplating some type of perm, or at least mad curls to amp up the volume.

2)  BRIGHT LIPS – You will recall that I’ve been wanting to wear more lip colours other than the usual neutral and boring.  I had some success in the year 2010 with burgundies/reds and wish to continue with the trend.  (Side story:  I gathered enough courage to wear a red lip out a few months ago only to be reminded by my dad that “it was not Halloween yet”.  I guess he’s not in support of this style goal!  Whatevs, whatevs.)

3)  SPEND OUT – Spending out, according to The Happiness Project, means using up what you have instead of hoarding and saving them.  For example, I have clothes in my closet that still have their price tags because I want to save them for that “special occasion”.  I own pairs of gorgeous shoes that I spent a small fortune on but only wore once because I am afraid of scratching them.  I have to get it through to my head that these are items I’ve already spent money on and they are just collecting dust!  To spend out also includes throwing things out or giving things away.  I’m so sure I can chuck nail polishes that have dried out or black pants that have faded from wash.  Selling some of my clothes on websites like craigslist or kijiji is also something I want to do this year.

4)  DIFFERENT SILHOUETTES – My default silhouette is a loose top paired with snugly fitted pants/jeans.  This shape has become so boring to me!  I want to try creating new lines on the body with items like maxi skirts, dresses with a relaxed waist, wide-legged pants and body-hugging bodycon dresses.

5)  MINIMAL JEANS – I find that owning jeans really curbs my creativity.  Throwing on a pair of denim with a graphic tee is just too much of an easy way out for my lazy days, and I have too many lazy days.

Tell us, what are your style goals of 2011?

Just to give you some visuals for the new year, here’s a look I did over the Christmas holiday.  Obviously I was quite literal with the colours.  I find that I put my fashion hat on so often that I forget makeup art is my first love.

I present to you my best squinty-eye smile!  Happy New Year, friends of Tinytines. Thank you for your companionship throughout the year and we hope to continue to provide content that is worth your while in 2011.
